A Note on Our Methodology
The archival component of our project was created using photographs and texts provided by the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections. Using the Stanford Topic Modeling Toolbox to perform analyses on more than 50 Carlisle publications, including The Red Man and The Indian Craftsman, we extracted five main "topics" from these resources that became our taxonomy system for the website. Inspired by these topics, we curated a selection of photographs from the larger collection to represent life at CIIS. Using TextSTAT, we excerpted quotations from the text that we felt complimented both the photograph and the larger thematic topics as identified by TMT. Our own analysis of the visual-text combination reflects the broader understandings evident in the topic modeling exercise, as well as additional secondary source research.
The data visualization portion of our project is based off of data from CIIS ledgers. The ledgers provide valuable information about the outing program as well as the student demographics of the institution. The visual component was created using Tableau; our analysis reflects an understanding of the larger data collection as well as additional research.
